Plug-in Fleet – Heavy-Duty Trucks: The Innovative Vehicle Institute Announces the Opening of Trial and Project Registration for Corporate Fleet Operators

Phase 2 - Analyse

Saint-Jérôme, March 30, 2022 – The Innovative Vehicle Institute is proud to announce the deployment of its “Plug-in Fleet Heavy-Duty Trucks” project, which aims to provide free support to owners and operators of heavy-duty vehicles who wish to introduce 100% electric trucks to the Quebec market. The Institute has officially opened registration for information sessions and trials of heavy-duty electric vehicles that will take place in the fall of 2022, and will also allow selected participants to take part in the project’s analysis and experimentation phases.

For this three-year project, the IVI is teaming up with key partners in the transportation ecosystem and will meet with operators, develop feasibility analysis reports for some 30 selected companies, and coordinate test periods of heavy-duty electric trucks in real-world commercial use.

“The objective of the ‘Plug-in Fleet – Heavy-Duty Trucks’ project is to encourage Quebec companies to make the shift to clean energy. Our role will be to provide operators with the tools and knowledge to establish an electrification plan for their heavy-duty fleet.”

-François Adam, general manager, Innovative Vehicle Institute

In the fall of 2022, two (2) free events will be held, bringing together more than 100 heavy-duty fleet operators. These events will allow participants to learn all about electrification and test drive heavy-duty electric vehicles.

Starting in November 2022, 30 participating companies will be selected to receive a free analysis of their usage data to determine their level of compatibility with the current offer of electric trucks and get a customized report to start their transition.

As of 2023, at least five selected companies will be able to experience driving electric vehicles and will obtain a free loan of an electric truck, including the appropriate recharging infrastructure, thus providing easier access to the electric technology that has arrived on the Quebec market.

At the end of the project, in 2024, the IVI will organize a provincial tour to inform operators about the project’s progress and shed light on operational issues, while also identifying the conditions for successful electrification of heavy-duty trucking in Quebec.

Operators who wish to participate in the project or in the testing and information sessions are invited to register now on the following website: flotterechargeable.ca.

“Heavy-duty vehicles emit nearly 37% of the Québec transportation sector’s greenhouse gas emissions. Electrifying heavy-duty truck fleets is undeniably a relevant solution that can contribute to significantly reducing Québec’s emissions. That’s why our government is supporting this Innovative Vehicle Institute initiative. The project will enable truck owners to learn more about the products available on the market and experience the advantages of electric vehicles. It is through the transmission of knowledge and experiencing new ways of doing things that we will be able to sustainably transform our transport sector. I therefore wish the entire team every success!”

-Mr. Benoit Charette, Minister of the Environment and the Fight against Climate Change, Minister Responsible for the Fight against Racism and Minister Responsible for the Laval Region.

This project is being carried out through a financial contribution from the Government of Québec as part of the Action-Climat Québec program and meets the objectives of the 2030 Plan for a Green Economy.

The IVI is pleased to have the support of the following key ecosystem partners: the Ministère de l’Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques (MELCC), Hydro-Québec, Lion Electric Company, the Association du Camionnage du Québec (ACQ), Peterbilt, Volvo, the Centre de formation du transport routier de Saint-Jérôme (CFTR), the Centre de formation en transport de Charlesbourg, Sia Partners, Camo-Route, and the Centre de gestion de l’équipement roulant (CGER).
